Charles Chuka is MTL new CEO

Malawi’s leading fixed phone company, MTL has announced that it has a new CEO at the helm of its leadership. This comes after the company bid farewell to the outgoing CEO, Mr. Bernd Flack on 16th December, 2010.

Making the announcement on the appointment, MTL’s Chairman of the Board, Prof Mathews Chikaonda said this development has come after the lapse of the 4 years contract that was there between Detecon and MTL. The appointment of Mr. Charles Chuka as CEO of MTL comes in fulfillment of the localization of leadership position. Currently MTL has local leaders in all its management position.

He further added “We are proud that we now have local leadership at MTL. These are people who have undergone telco training for a period of over 2 years. And today we have a true son of Malawi leading the institution. He has vast experience that will ensure we take the brand to new heights”

Mr. Charles Chuka is no stranger in the leadership circles in Malawi. He was Senior Advisor to the Executive Director representing 22 of the 46 Sub-Saharan Africa countries in the Boards of the World Bank headquarters in Washington DC. He joined the office of the Executive Director in October 2003 and his primary responsibilities included advising the Executive Director on Malawi, Mozambique, World Bank’s development strategies and programs, the implementation of Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative, the policy and operational framework for IDA and on the finances of the World Bank.

Prior to joining the World Bank Group, Mr. Chuka was General Manager for Economic Services in the Reserve Bank of Malawi, which he joined in 1979 and served in various capacities and departments. He has a Master of Philosophy in Monetary Economics from the University of Glasgow, Scotland and a Bachelor of Social Science (Economics and Sociology) degree from the University of Malawi
