Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) spoiled Mzuzu golfers with assorted prizes on Saturday after a day of stiff competition to determine winners in a golf tournament played at the Mzuzu Golf Club. And the multi-sectoral communication service provider did not want to stop just at splashing prizes for the golfers as it went further to donate a K100, 000 cheque to Mzuzu golf club for the improvement of the golf course.

After the tournament, played on an individual stable fold, Mzuzu based Vijay Yadav went back home the happiest man after pocketing the biggest prize of a refrigerator, a trophy, a three-piece set of folding chairs and a Mobidem dongle with a one week internet voucher.

But Yadav had to beat a stiff challenge from Micah Phiri to win the coveted prize as he had tied with Phiri on 41 points. Yadav won via a count back as he beat Phiri with 21ins against 19.

The second placed Phiri went home with a trophy, a six-piece set of Venus chairs, a CDMA handset and with a K600 airtime voucher. Third placed Wilson Kaingwe of Dwangwa golf club won a three-piece set of chairs, a CDMA handset and a K600 airtime voucher.

Maureen Moleni came out the better of the two ladies as she outclassed veteran Charity Kaonga and went away with a trophy, an e-Mobidem dongle with a K4,800 voucher and a set of chairs.

Asked about his secret after the prize presentation, Yadav – who has played golf for the past 10 years and Saturday’s was only his second major win – said his approach to the game made him winner stressing that he played just to enjoy.“That aside, my playing partner Wilson Kaingwe was playing well so I found it easy to play well as well. He is from our sister club in Dwangwa and playing together always helps,” said Yadav.MTL Marketing Manager Wanangwa Thindwa said the tournament helped them achieve their objective of interacting with their customers in general stressing that Mzuzu golf club members who are not golf players also turned up for the show.
