MTL and KCN give Madziabango Health clinic timely relief

Madziabango Health Clinic, through Senior Group Village Headman Kantimbanya, received much needed relief when MTL donated two bicycle ambulances on 13th September 2017 to help the community meet challenges it faces in fighting maternal and neonatal complications and deaths among pregnant women and infants.

The donation was presented by MTL’s Chief Commercial Officer Gladson Kuyeri who explained that as a part of society MTL is committed to carrying out Corporate Social Responsibility campaigns and programs within the environment in which it operates.

“We have a department that looks into Community relations and when we were approached with a proposal to help the Madziabango facility we saw the seriousness of the need for us to help with these bicycle ambulances”, he said.

The needs of the community in the area were brought to light following a Community assessment activity by Kamuzu College of Nursing’s Master of Nursing in Midwifery students who brought the need to the attention of MTL.

Representing the college at the handover ceremony was Professor Ellen Chirwa, KCN’s Acting Principal, who hailed the students for not only thinking about grades in class, but also making a difference in the area where they conducted their research.

“I am a mother, nurse, and a midwife so these issues concern me greatly. At KCN we teach our students to have love and compassion in carrying out their duties and we are teaching them to look at the needs of the community where they study. We asked them to go into the communities and report on what was needed there and that’s why we are here today”

Professor Chirwa further commented on the impact the bicycle ambulances would have on the community saying they would help pregnant women get to hospital on time, thereby preventing  loss of mother and infant lives due to unattended births.

“I would like to thank MTL for this because it will save many lives of mothers and infants in the community. To the community, please take care of the ambulances. They will have wear and tear but let us ensure that they are maintained,” she said.

Madziabango Health Facility is in the jurisdiction of Group Village Head Kantambanya and he was available to receive the donation from MTL on behalf of the community. He called on his people to honour the gifts they were receiving and to treat them with care as they belonged to the whole community.

“When the students from KCN came we had no idea that we would get such honour. My heart is filled with much joy for this blessing that has come to us.  This is a hilly area and the bicycle ambulances will help us reach inaccessible areas to get pregnant women to the clinic,” he said.

Madziabango is one of the health facilities under Blantyre District Hospital and is located South-west of Blantyre city under Traditional Authority Nsomba. The facility provides health services to people from Chikwawa, Thyolo and Blantyre districts. It provides out-patient, maternal and neonatal health services including labour and delivery among others.
