Malawi Telecommunications Limited-MTL spread some Christmas love on 21st December 2017 when members of staff visited and donated gifts at the Mulanje District Hospital’s Maternity wing.
Speaking at the hospital, the company’s Corporate Affairs Manager Tina Das observed that motherhood has no holiday thus one of the reasons why the company decided to cheer those who might be in hospital during the period of festivities.
“Some of the mothers are our customers while their babies are our potential customers. We specifically chose our mothers because they form an integral part in our lives and we wanted to take some time to appreciate them during this time when they may not get to celebrate at home as others will,” she said.
55 mothers received a Christmas hamper each which among other things contained basic necessities such as food items and soap. The gifts were received on their behalf by the Maternity wing’s Nurse-in-Charge Lonely Steven who voiced her appreciation on behalf of all mothers.
“MTL would have chosen to go to any hospital and would have chosen to go to any other wing at the hospital but you chose the Maternity wing of Mulanje District hospital and we do not take this for granted. The wing has limited resources and we fail to share these with everyone and so the items you have shared will greatly help our mothers during their time here,” she said.
During MTL’s visit 11 new-borns received aid through their mothers including two sets of twins. Mulanje District Hospital is the main government hospital in the district and has a bed capacity of 320 patients but admits much more than the required capacity and as a result the hospital is usually strained for resources and any aid that goes to it is truly needed.
